3D motion capture technology
Most bike fitting specialists fit riders while the person is set in static positions on their bike with the use of plumb bobs and tape measures. These are unreliable as a person pedals fluidly not in set positions. Using the video footage of you in your natural position on your own bike, Dartfish technology is used to pause the footage at specific points to allow Kate to obtain the necessary measurements. These measurements will enable Kate to ascertain your body position on the bike, therefore the cause of pain and also the efficiency of your style of pedal stroke.
Kate is trained as a physiotherapist with a special interest in cyclists and triathletes. Nearly all bike fitters start out as bike mechanics or engineers, so unfortunately they often focus their attention to solely to the bike, trying to 'fit the bike to the person'. However, in the majority of cases the cause of the rider's pain is not only caused by the bike but nearly always the rider also. Due to Kate being a physiotherapist she has extensive knowledge of human anatomy and sports related injuries so she can look at the full picture of the rider and bike, rather than just the bike.
Full Musculoskeletal Assessment
As part of the Comprehensive Fit a full musculoskeletal assessment will be carried out. This includes testing all commonly used muscles for their flexibility and weaknesses, testing all joints for any stiffness or laxity and assessing your core stability strength/ endurance. The results from this give a huge insight to your probable pedalling style and likely causes for your pain on the bike.
Home program of exercises and drills
Following your full assessment Kate will put together a personalised program of home exercises for you to carry out. This will consist of stretching and strengthening necessary muscles, along with a selection of appropriate core strengthening exercises tailored to your ability. Also if required, she may suggest some drills for you to practise on your bike to help improve your pedalling technique.
If you wish to carry out your strengthening & stretching program in a structure group environment Kate teaches a number of classes which are purposely designed for cyclists & triathletes. These classes consist of a maximum of 8 people and suit all abilities, all you need is the determination to improve!
